We honor you, S* woman of valor

The story I'm about to share has haunted me, and will not easily leave my mind. I believe it is an important story to share because it gives insight into the true bravery of women we partner with, and the reality of the obstacles they are up against. They are truly my heroes.

It's also important because it illustrates the dangers of theology that gives power to some to the exclusion of others. For more on that, I highly recommend any resources from my friend Rev. Dr. Jackie Roese (https://www.themarcellaproject.com/) . I imagine that Jesus is weeping at the scene. As you read, please hold this sister in your heart in prayer.

Jen
(inspired by the roll call of faith, found in Hebrews 11)

It was by faith that S* counted the cost.

She knew planting churches was dangerous. She could've stopped after the last confrontation, or after her mom passed away. And the biggest surprise of all? It would be brothers in Christ that would give her the biggest trouble that day.

As she carried out her daily routine, she was surrounded by a local church pastor & his church members. They threatened her, attacked her, and beat her. She pleaded with them, and explained that she is 4 months pregnant. They didn't listen, and it didn't stop them. They were filled with zeal for their gospel - a gospel challenged by women who dared to assert their voice or authority in any realm of life.

Her crime? Daring to share Jesus and form new house churches. "Who gave you the authority to do this? You are a woman." And this, from the lips of brothers who claimed to serve the same God.

S* lost her mom this year, so this comes at a particularly vulnerable time. After stepping away for a time to grieve her mom's death, I remember being on the first call with her as she chose to re-engage. Her eyes were filled with both hope and loss. This is the only update I've received about her since then. She is one of the brave women that, counting the cost, carry the Gospel into uncharted territory, unsure of what they'll encounter.

We honor you today S*, woman of valor.
